Solar PV Installation Across North Wales
At Chris Allen Renewables & Heating, we install high-quality solar panel systems across North Wales, Mid Wales and surrounding border areas, helping homeowners future-proof their properties with reliable renewable energy solutions.
Typical savings of £400-£800 per year on electricity bills
Understanding the Technology
What is Solar PV?
Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels convert sunlight directly into electricity. When light hits the solar cells, it creates an electrical current that can power your home, charge your electric car, or be stored in a battery for later use.
Modern solar panels work even on cloudy days, though they produce more energy in direct sunlight. A typical home system in North Wales can generate between 3,000 and 4,500 kWh per year, enough to cover a significant portion of your electricity needs.
Unlike the Feed-in Tariff which ended in 2019, there are no longer government payments for generating solar electricity. However, the Smart Export Guarantee means you can still earn money for any excess electricity you export to the grid, and the real savings come from using the free electricity you generate.
Solar PV Panels Can:
- Generate free electricity whenever the sun is shining
- Reduce your reliance on the grid and volatile energy prices
- Pair with battery storage to use solar power day and night
- Typical systems pay for themselves within 8-12 years
- Panels come with 25-year performance warranties
- Increase your property value with a quality installation
The Technology Explained
How Do Solar Panels Work?
Understanding the simple process of turning sunlight into usable electricity for your home.
01
Light Absorption
Solar cells in the panels absorb photons from sunlight. Even on overcast days, there is enough light to generate electricity, though output is higher in direct sun.
02
Electricity Generation
The absorbed light energy knocks electrons loose in the solar cells, creating a flow of direct current (DC) electricity. This happens silently with no moving parts.
03
Power Conversion
An inverter converts the DC electricity into alternating current (AC), which is what your home uses. The inverter also optimises output and monitors system performance.
04
Use, Store or Export
Use the electricity immediately in your home, store excess in a battery for evening use, or export surplus to the grid and earn through the Smart Export Guarantee.
Impressive Energy Output
A typical 4kW solar panel system in North Wales generates around 3,400 kWh of electricity per year. That is enough to power your washing machine, dishwasher, and fridge-freezer for over a decade, all from a single year of sunshine.

Will solar panels work in North Wales with our weather?
Yes, absolutely. Solar panels work with daylight, not direct sunshine. While you will generate more on sunny days, panels still produce electricity on cloudy days. Germany, with similar weather to the UK, is one of the world’s leading solar nations. A typical system in North Wales generates enough to make a real difference to your bills.
How much roof space do I need for solar panels?
A typical 4kW system needs around 20-25 square metres of roof space, which is about 10-12 panels. We can work with smaller roofs by using fewer, higher-efficiency panels. During our survey, we will measure your available space and design a system that fits perfectly.
Do solar panels need to face south?
South-facing roofs generate the most electricity, but east and west-facing roofs work very well too, generating around 80-85% as much. North-facing roofs are generally not suitable. Many homes have multiple roof sections, and we can often use a combination for optimal results.
What happens to excess electricity I generate?
Any electricity you do not use immediately can be exported to the grid. Under the Smart Export Guarantee, energy suppliers must offer you payment for this exported power. Alternatively, you can install a battery to store excess electricity for use in the evening when the sun has set.
How long do solar panels last?
Modern solar panels typically come with 25-year performance warranties, guaranteeing they will still produce at least 80% of their original output after 25 years. In practice, many panels continue working well beyond 30 years. The inverter usually needs replacing after 10-15 years.
Do solar panels require much maintenance?
Solar panels are virtually maintenance-free. Rain generally keeps them clean enough, though an occasional clean can help if you live near trees or in a dusty area. We recommend an annual check of the system, particularly the inverter, to ensure optimal performance.
Can I add a battery later?
Yes, you can add a battery at any time after your solar installation. We design systems with this in mind, making future upgrades straightforward. Many customers start with panels and add a battery a year or two later when they see how much excess electricity they are generating.
Will solar panels damage my roof?
No, when installed correctly. Our MCS certified installers use industry-standard mounting systems that are weatherproof and designed for UK conditions. We carefully assess your roof structure and use appropriate fixings. Most systems add minimal weight that standard roofs easily support.
How long does installation take?
Most residential solar installations are completed in 1-2 days. Larger systems or those requiring additional electrical work may take slightly longer. We will give you a clear timeline before work begins and keep disruption to your household to a minimum.
What happens if something goes wrong after installation?
We are here to help. Our aftercare service means you can call us with any concerns or questions. Most components are covered by manufacturer warranties, which we handle on your behalf. We monitor many systems remotely and can often identify issues before you even notice them.
