Consumer Unit Upgrades
Modern fuse board replacements with RCD/RCBO protection. Safety, compliance, and capacity for renewable energy systems.
Safety & Future-Proofing
Is Your Fuse Board Due an Upgrade?
If your home still has an old fuse board with rewirable fuses or lacks RCD protection, it’s time to consider an upgrade. Modern consumer units provide life-saving protection against electric shocks and significantly reduce fire risk.
Planning to install solar panels, a heat pump, or an EV charger? These systems need dedicated circuits with appropriate protection. We’ll ensure your consumer unit has the capacity and protection devices needed—now and for future installations.

Why Upgrade
Reasons to Replace Your Consumer Unit
Whether it’s safety, insurance, or preparing for renewables, there are good reasons to upgrade.
Safety Compliance
Older fuse boards lack modern RCD protection that can prevent electric shocks and reduce fire risk. An upgrade brings your home up to current safety standards.
- RCD/RCBO protection
- Arc fault detection
- Current regulations
- Peace of mind
Insurance Requirements
Some insurers now require modern consumer units. An upgrade ensures your home meets their requirements and your policy remains valid.
- Policy compliance
- Certified work
- Documentation
- Building control

Our Process
How It Works
A straightforward process from assessment to certification.
Assessment
We inspect your current consumer unit, assess your electrical system, and discuss your current and future needs.
Recommendation
We recommend the right consumer unit for your property—with enough capacity for any planned renewable installations.
Fixed Quote
You receive a clear, fixed-price quote covering all work, certification, and building control notification.
Installation
Work typically takes half a day. We isolate the supply, install the new unit, test all circuits, and restore power.
Certification
You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate. As NAPIT members, we self-certify and notify building control.

How long will the power be off?
Typically 4-6 hours while we complete the changeover. We’ll confirm the expected duration before starting and can sometimes work around your schedule if you have specific requirements.
Do I need to upgrade before installing solar or a heat pump?
Often yes. Renewable installations require dedicated circuits with appropriate protection. Older consumer units may lack space or the correct protection devices. We assess this during our survey and include any necessary upgrades in our renewable installation quotes.
What's the difference between RCDs and RCBOs?
RCDs protect groups of circuits—if one trips, multiple circuits lose power. RCBOs protect individual circuits, so a fault only affects one circuit. We typically recommend RCBO boards for better protection and convenience, though they cost slightly more.
Will you need to do any rewiring?
A consumer unit upgrade doesn’t usually require rewiring—we’re replacing the distribution board, not the cables. However, if we identify any safety issues with your existing wiring during the inspection, we’ll discuss options with you.
