Understanding the Technology
What Is An Air Source Heat Pump?
An air source heat pump is a highly efficient heating system that extracts heat from the outside air and uses it to provide heating and hot water for your home. Even in colder temperatures, heat pumps are able to absorb and transfer heat efficiently, helping homeowners reduce reliance on traditional gas or oil heating systems.
Air source heat pumps work differently to conventional boilers. Rather than generating heat by burning fuel, they move existing heat energy from outside into your home using electricity. This makes them a lower-carbon and more energy-efficient way to heat your property.
For many homeowners, switching to a heat pump can feel like a big change — especially when questions arise around hot water cylinders, radiator upgrades or how the system will work day to day.
Air Source Heat Pumps Can Help You:
- Lower your home’s carbon emissions
- Reduce reliance on fossil fuels
- Improve long-term energy efficiency
- Provide reliable heating and hot water year-round
- Future-proof your home against changing energy standards
- Pair with Solar PV and battery storage systems
The Technology Explained
How Does an Air Source Heat Pump Work?
Understanding the simple science behind how your heat pump efficiently warms your home and water.
01
Air Absorption
The outdoor unit draws in air from outside, even in cold weather. A fan passes this air over a heat exchanger containing a refrigerant fluid.
02
Heat Extraction
The refrigerant absorbs heat energy from the air and evaporates into a gas. This gas is then compressed, which significantly increases its temperature.
03
Heat Distribution
The hot gas passes through a heat exchanger, transferring warmth to your central heating system. This heats your radiators, underfloor heating, or fan convectors.
04
Hot Water Production
The same process heats water stored in a cylinder, providing your home with hot water for taps and showers throughout the day.
Remarkably Efficient Technology
For every unit of electricity used to power the heat pump, you get 3-4 units of heat energy for your home. This means running costs can be significantly lower than traditional gas or oil heating systems, especially as energy prices continue to rise.
Why Choose a Heat Pump
Benefits of Air Source Heat Pumps
Discover why thousands of homeowners across the UK are switching to air source heat pumps for their heating needs.
01.
Lower Running Costs
Heat pumps are highly efficient, meaning you could save hundreds of pounds annually compared to oil or LPG heating systems.
02.
Reduced Carbon Footprint
By using renewable energy from the air, you significantly reduce your home’s greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels.
03.
Government Grants Available
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers up to £7,500 towards installation costs. As MCS certified installers, we handle all the paperwork for you.
04.
Low Maintenance
Heat pumps have fewer moving parts than boilers and require minimal servicing, typically just an annual check-up to ensure optimal performance.
05.
Quiet Operation
Modern air source heat pumps operate quietly, similar to a fridge. Carefully positioned units ensure minimal noise disruption to you or neighbours.
06.
Long Lifespan
With proper maintenance, air source heat pumps can last 20-25 years, making them a sound long-term investment for your home.

Many homeowners worry about disruption and changes to their home. Here is how we address the most common concerns.
Minimal Disruption
We understand your home is your sanctuary. Our teams work cleanly and efficiently, protecting your floors and furniture throughout.
Cylinder Considerations
Heat pumps work best with a hot water cylinder. If you have a combi boiler, we'll discuss the best cylinder options and placement for you.
Radiator Assessment
Your existing radiators may work fine, or some may need upsizing. We'll assess this during the survey and include any changes in your quote.
Planning & Permissions
Most installations fall under permitted development. If planning permission is needed, we'll guide you through the process.

Will an air source heat pump work in cold Welsh winters?
Yes, modern air source heat pumps are designed to work efficiently even when temperatures drop to -15°C or lower. While efficiency does reduce slightly in very cold weather, the systems are specifically engineered for UK climates. Many homes across North Wales are already benefiting from heat pumps year-round.
Will a heat pump reduce my energy bills?
For most homeowners replacing oil, LPG, or electric heating, yes. Heat pumps are 300-400% efficient, meaning for every unit of electricity used, you get 3-4 units of heat. If you are replacing a gas boiler, savings depend on your electricity tariff. We can provide estimated running costs during your consultation.
Do I need to remove my existing boiler and radiators?
Not necessarily. Your existing radiators may work perfectly well with a heat pump, especially if they were slightly oversized for your original system. During our survey, we assess each radiator and let you know if any need upsizing. As for the boiler, while it will no longer be your primary heat source, some homeowners keep it as a backup initially for peace of mind.
Will I need a hot water cylinder?
Yes, heat pumps require a hot water cylinder to store heated water. If you currently have a combi boiler with no cylinder, we will need to install one. We will discuss the best size and location during your survey, minimising any impact on your living space.
How noisy are air source heat pumps?
Modern heat pumps are remarkably quiet, typically producing around 40-50 decibels at a metre distance, similar to a refrigerator or quiet conversation. We carefully position the outdoor unit to minimise any noise impact on you and your neighbours, and there are planning guidelines we follow regarding placement.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and am I eligible?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government grant offering up to £7,500 towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump. To be eligible, you need a valid EPC for your property, and you must be replacing a fossil fuel heating system. As MCS certified installers, we handle the entire application process for you.
How long does installation typically take?
A typical air source heat pump installation takes 2-3 days for most homes. This includes fitting the outdoor unit, connecting to your heating system, installing any new radiators or a cylinder if needed, and commissioning the system. We always aim to minimise disruption to your daily routine.
What maintenance does a heat pump need?
Heat pumps require relatively little maintenance compared to boilers. We recommend an annual service check to ensure the system is running efficiently, clean the filters, and check refrigerant levels. Beyond that, simply keeping the outdoor unit clear of debris and ensuring good airflow is usually sufficient.
Is my home suitable for a heat pump?
Most homes can accommodate a heat pump, but some are better suited than others. Ideal homes have reasonable insulation, space for an outdoor unit, and room for a hot water cylinder. Homes with underfloor heating work particularly well. During our free survey, we assess your home’s suitability and discuss any improvements that might be beneficial.
What happens if something goes wrong after installation?
We are always here to help. If you experience any issues, simply call us and we will arrange for one of our engineers to visit. Most heat pumps come with a manufacturer warranty of 5-7 years, and we support you through any warranty claims. Our aftercare service means you are never left without support.
