Understanding the Technology

What is a Home EV Charger?

A home EV charger, also called a charging point or wallbox, is a dedicated unit installed at your property that charges your electric vehicle much faster than a standard 3-pin plug. Most home chargers deliver 7kW of power, compared to just 2.3kW from a domestic socket.

Modern smart chargers can be controlled via an app, allowing you to schedule charging during off-peak electricity hours, track your energy usage, and even integrate with your solar panels to charge using free electricity from your roof.

With the 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales approaching, and electricity costing around 3p per mile compared to 15p for petrol, there has never been a better time to prepare for the electric future.

The Technology Explained

How Does Home EV Charging Work?

Charging at home is simple and far more convenient than relying on public charging points.

01

Connect Your Vehicle

Simply plug your EV into the home charger using the tethered cable or your vehicle's own charging cable, depending on your charger type.

02

Power Delivery

The charger delivers up to 7kW of power safely to your vehicle's battery through the onboard charger. This is around 7x faster than a standard plug.

03

Smart Control

Use the smartphone app to schedule charging during off-peak hours, monitor progress, and track your energy usage. Some chargers integrate directly with solar systems.

04

Ready to Go

Wake up to a fully charged vehicle every morning, ready for whatever your day brings. Most EVs will fully charge overnight from a 7kW charger.

Charger Speed Comparison

A 7kW home charger adds around 30 miles of range per hour, meaning most EVs can fully charge overnight. Compare this to a 3-pin plug which adds just 5-8 miles per hour and takes 24+ hours for a full charge.

Why Install a Home Charger

Benefits of Home EV Charging

Discover why a dedicated home charger is essential for getting the most from your electric vehicle.

01.

Dramatic Cost Savings

Charging at home costs around 3p per mile compared to 15p for petrol. Most EV owners see fuel costs drop by 70% or more.

02.

Ultimate Convenience

No more detours to petrol stations. Simply plug in when you get home and wake up to a full battery every morning.

03.

Solar Integration

If you have solar panels, smart chargers can automatically charge your car using free electricity from your roof during the day.

04.

Smart Features

Schedule charging for off-peak rates, monitor usage via app, set charging limits, and receive notifications when charging is complete.

05.

Safer Than Plug Sockets

Dedicated EV chargers are designed for continuous high-power use, unlike standard sockets which can overheat with prolonged charging.

06.

Lower Emissions

Electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions. Charge from renewable sources like solar for truly green motoring.

We Understand Your Concerns

Many homeowners have questions about electrical capacity and regulations. Here is how we address the most common concerns.

Electrical Capacity

We assess your home's electrical supply during the survey. Most homes can accommodate a 7kW charger without upgrades, but if changes are needed, we include this in your quote.

Charger Location

We find the optimal position considering cable length to your parking spot, proximity to your consumer unit, weather protection, and visual appearance.

Building Regulations

EV charger installation must comply with Part P building regulations. As NAPIT-certified installers, we handle all compliance and provide the required certificates.

Listed Buildings

If you live in a listed building or conservation area, additional permissions may be needed. We advise on this during the survey and can guide you through any applications.

How much does an EV charger cost to install?

A typical home EV charger installation costs between £800-£1,200 including the charger unit and installation. The exact price depends on the charger model you choose, distance from your consumer unit, and whether any electrical upgrades are needed. We provide a fixed-price quote after our free site survey with no hidden costs.

With a 7kW home charger (the most common type), a typical EV with a 60kWh battery takes around 8-9 hours for a full charge from empty. However, most people top up daily rather than charging from empty, so you will usually only need 2-4 hours. Charging overnight means you wake up to a full battery every day.

Technically yes, but it is not recommended for regular use. A standard 3-pin plug only delivers 2.3kW, taking 24+ hours for a full charge and putting strain on your home’s wiring. A dedicated EV charger is up to 7x faster, much safer, and designed for daily use. We always recommend a proper installation.

In most cases, no planning permission is required for home EV charger installation under permitted development rights. However, there are some exceptions for listed buildings, conservation areas, or if the charger would face a highway. We check this during our survey and advise you accordingly.

Yes, many smart EV chargers can integrate with your solar panel system to prioritise charging when you are generating free electricity. Some chargers have built-in solar integration, while others work through your home energy management system. We can advise on the best setup for your situation.

A tethered charger has a cable permanently attached, which is convenient as you just grab and plug in. An untethered charger has a socket, and you use your own cable, which is useful if you have two different EVs or prefer a tidier look when not charging. We can recommend which suits your needs best.

Home charging is significantly cheaper. At current electricity rates, home charging costs about 3-4p per mile. Public rapid chargers can cost 70-80p/kWh or more, working out at 15-20p per mile. That is a saving of over £1,000 per year for average mileage.

Your EV charger is a valuable addition to your property and typically stays with the house when you move. It can even increase your property value as EV ownership grows. If you really want to take it with you, we can discuss removal and reinstallation, though it is usually more cost-effective to install new.

Yes, all the chargers we install are rated for outdoor use with IP65 or higher protection against rain, snow, and dust. They are designed to operate safely in all UK weather conditions, from Welsh rain to winter frost.

We provide full aftercare support including warranty registration, app setup assistance, and ongoing technical support. If you ever have any issues with your charger, we are just a phone call away. As a local company, we pride ourselves on being available for our customers long after the installation.
